When you have small children at home, you can't be too careful, especially with some objects that can be very dangerous for them. Stefhany and Brian, a couple living in Tusa, Oklahoma, knew this, but one small oversight was enough to cause the loss of their 2-year-old daughter.<\/p>\n
The parents didn't know what was happening; they just noticed their daughter was turning blue and soon after began vomiting blood. They immediately rushed her to the hospital. Shortly before this incident, the parents noticed their child had a fever, but they didn't pay much attention to it, as it wasn't high, but something serious was happening. Upon arrival at the hospital, doctors discovered what was happening: the girl had swallowed a lithium battery\u2014the kind found in watches, children's toys, and many other devices we all have at home.<\/p>\n
Swallowing batteries can cause symptoms that can easily be confused with flu symptoms. These batteries are very dangerous if swallowed, as if lodged in the esophagus, they can cause severe burns in just two hours. If left untreated, they can perforate the esophagus and cause serious problems for up to 28 days after removal. Unfortunately, in the girl's case, the condition was fatal.<\/p>\n
The child's great-grandfather said that she was immediately treated and had to undergo emergency surgery, but doctors were unable to reverse the bleeding and the child died.<\/p>\n
The doctor who treated the girl reported that the battery had become lodged in her esophagus and caused irreversible damage. Since she had swallowed the battery more than two hours ago, the battery severely damaged her esophagus, so much so that doctors could do nothing to reverse the situation, as the damage was too severe, and the child eventually died.<\/p>\n
Doctors warn parents to be very careful with this type of battery if they have small children at home, as these batteries are present in most children's toys and can be fatal.<\/p>\n
