Hair Loss: Causes and Treatment

You just had a baby and were expecting that special motherhood glow, but instead, every time you shower or brush your hair, it feels like you're losing whole handfuls of strands.

The shower drain gets clogged, the brush is full of hair, and the pillow seems to have more hair than your head.

You look in the mirror and notice that your hair is visibly thinner, especially on the sides and in the front.

And then comes that terrifying thought: am I going to go bald?

Take a deep breath, because you're not alone and you're not going bald.

What you are experiencing is an extremely common condition called postpartum telogen effluvium, and it happens to about half of all women who have babies.

The good news is that this hair loss is temporary, has a clear scientific explanation, and in the vast majority of cases, resolves itself completely.

Let's understand exactly what's happening in your body, why it's happening, when it will stop, and what you can do to help your hair return to normal.

Why Does Hair Fall Out After Having a Baby?

To understand postpartum hair loss, you first need to know how pregnancy affected your hair in ways you probably didn't even realize at the time.

During pregnancy, a woman's body undergoes a complete hormonal revolution.

Estrogen levels, one of the main female hormones, rise significantly, reaching up to one hundred times higher than normal by the end of pregnancy.

This elevated estrogen does several important things to maintain a healthy pregnancy, but it also has an interesting and unexpected effect on hair.

It prolongs the hair growth phase.

Remember how we explained earlier that hair has a cycle with three phases: growth, transition, and rest?

Typically, about 85 to 90 percent of your hair strands are in the growth phase, and 10 to 15 percent are in the resting phase, ready to fall out.

During pregnancy, high estrogen levels keep significantly more hair follicles in the growth phase than normal.

Hair strands that would normally enter the resting phase and fall out continue to grow.

That's why many pregnant women notice that their hair becomes fuller, more voluminous, and shinier during pregnancy.

They actually have more hair on their heads because fewer strands are falling out.

Some women even say that their hair has never looked as good as it did during pregnancy.

But this situation is artificial, maintained by pregnancy hormones.

When a baby is born, everything changes drastically and very quickly.

In the first few days after childbirth, estrogen levels plummet, returning to normal levels within days or a few weeks.

This abrupt hormonal drop is the trigger for what comes next.

All those extra hairs that were artificially kept in the growth phase during pregnancy are now receiving the signal to enter the resting phase at the same time.

It's as if the body is saying: the pregnancy is over, let's go back to normal, and all these extra hairs need to come out now.

The hairs don't fall out immediately because they first need to complete the resting phase, which lasts about three months.

Therefore, hair loss doesn't begin immediately after childbirth, but rather approximately two to four months later.

Many women report that hair loss begins when the baby is about three months old.

And it can be dramatic, because it's not just the normal amount of daily hair loss returning.

It's normal hair loss PLUS all those extra strands that should have fallen out during pregnancy but were retained.

It's as if you were losing nine months of accumulated decline all at once.

That's why it seems like such a huge loss, because it really is a lot of loss concentrated in a short period of time.

The peak of hair loss usually occurs around four months postpartum, and can continue for up to six or seven months after the baby's birth.

What to Expect: What Is This Fall Like?

Postpartum hair loss has some typical characteristics that can help you identify that this is indeed what is happening.

First, the hair loss is diffuse, meaning that the strands fall out scattered throughout the head, not concentrated in specific areas.

You won't develop round bald patches, nor will you only lose hair on one side.

It is a general thinning of the entire hair volume.

Many women notice that the hairline and temples, the area on the sides of the forehead, become particularly thin.

This happens because these areas have follicles that are especially sensitive to hormonal changes.

Some women develop those temporary "receding hairlines" on the sides, or notice that when they tie their hair back, their hairline is much further back than before.

This might sound scary, but it's completely normal and temporary.

The texture of the new hairs growing in may also be different.

When hair starts to grow back, many women notice a kind of "fringe" of short strands around the hairline.

These are the new hairs growing to replace the ones that have fallen out.

Sometimes these new hairs have a different texture; they may be curlier or straighter than the rest of the hair, and they may be frizzy.

This is also temporary; as the hair grows, it tends to return to its normal texture.

The amount of hair that falls out can be truly astonishing.

You can lose dozens or even hundreds of strands of hair per day during peak hair growth.

The shower drain can clog frequently, the brush fills up very quickly, and you find hair everywhere in the house.

It's important to know that even losing this much hair, you most likely won't end up with completely bald patches or visible bald spots.

Remember that you had extra hair during pregnancy, so even if you're losing a lot, you're returning to your pre-pregnancy hair.

Some women notice that their hair becomes visibly thinner, especially if they used to wear it in a ponytail, and they find that they need to wrap the elastic band around it more times now.

Others can see more of their scalp when they part their hair.

But rarely is the loss so severe as to cause obvious failures.

How long will it last?

This is the question every woman going through this wants to know: when will this stop?

The typical chronology of postpartum hair loss follows a relatively predictable pattern in most women.

Hair loss typically begins between two and four months after childbirth.

Some women start noticing it as early as the second month, while others only notice it in the fourth month.

The peak, when the hair loss is most intense, usually occurs between three and five months postpartum.

The total duration of active hair loss varies, but in most cases it lasts between three and six months from the onset.

This means that if it started three months postpartum, it will likely continue until six to nine months postpartum.

After this period, the hair loss will gradually decrease until it returns to normal.

Full hair density recovery takes longer because the hair needs to grow.

Since hair grows an average of one centimeter per month, if you lose 15 centimeters of hair, it will take 15 months for it to grow back to the same length.

Most women report that their hair volume returns to normal, pre-pregnancy levels, between six and twelve months after giving birth.

Some take up to fifteen or eighteen months to fully recover, especially if they experienced more severe hair loss.

It's important to have realistic expectations about the recovery process.

The first few months after noticing hair loss are the most emotionally difficult, because you see a lot of hair falling out and you don't yet see new growth compensating for it.

After hair loss stops, it takes a few months for new hairs to grow long enough to make a visible difference in volume.

Therefore, the period between four and nine months postpartum is usually the most challenging, when hair loss is active or has just stopped but visual recovery has not yet begun.

Be patient with yourself during this process.

Factors That Can Worsen or Prolong Hair Loss

Although postpartum hair loss is primarily hormonal and temporary, certain factors can make it more intense or prolonged.

Breastfeeding has an influence because it keeps hormones in a slightly different state than normal, with elevated prolactin and, in many cases, lower estrogen than before pregnancy.

Some women who exclusively breastfeed notice that hair loss continues for a little longer, or that their hair doesn't fully regain its volume while they are still breastfeeding.

When breastfeeding stops, there is another hormonal adjustment that can cause a second, smaller episode of hair loss a few weeks later.

Nutritional deficiencies can significantly worsen the situation.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding deplete the body's reserves of many nutrients, especially iron, zinc, vitamin D, and B vitamins.

If you already had low vitamin stores before pregnancy, or if you lost a lot of blood during childbirth, or if you are breastfeeding and not eating properly, these deficiencies can worsen hair loss.

Iron deserves special attention because iron deficiency is an additional cause of hair loss in itself.

Women who experienced heavy menstrual bleeding before pregnancy, who lost a lot of blood during childbirth, or who have an inadequate diet have a high risk of iron deficiency postpartum.

When you combine postpartum telogen effluvium with iron deficiency, the hair loss can be more dramatic and take longer to resolve.

The intense stress of the postpartum period can also contribute.

Having a newborn is stressful, sleep deprivation is extreme, the demands are constant, and many women experience anxiety or postpartum depression.

All this physical and emotional stress can worsen hair loss, because stress itself is a known trigger for telogen effluvium.

So you may be dealing with postpartum hormonal decline combined with decline due to stress, creating a more intense combined effect.

Thyroid problems are relatively common after childbirth, in a condition called postpartum thyroiditis.

This can cause both hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), and both can cause hair loss.

If your hair loss seems excessively severe, if it's accompanied by other symptoms such as extreme fatigue, significant weight changes, palpitations, or if it doesn't improve after six to nine months, it's worth investigating the thyroid.

Resuming hormonal contraceptives soon after childbirth is another factor that can influence this.

Starting to take birth control pills represents another hormonal change, and some women find that this can trigger or prolong hair loss.

On the other hand, some pills can help, especially those with antiandrogenic properties.

What can you do to help?

Although postpartum hair loss is a physiological process that will run its course regardless of what you do, there are steps you can take to help minimize damage and speed up recovery.

First and foremost: take care of your nutrition.

The postpartum period, especially if you are breastfeeding, has enormous nutritional demands.

You need enough calories and nutrients not only to recover from childbirth and produce milk, but also to maintain your own healthy tissues, including hair follicles.

Prioritize quality proteins in every meal, because hair is made of protein.

Lean meats, eggs, fish, chicken, dairy products, legumes such as beans and lentils, all provide the necessary amino acids.

Consume foods rich in iron, especially if you are at risk of deficiency.

Red meat is the best source of easily absorbed iron.

If you don't eat meat, combine plant-based sources of iron such as beans, lentils, and spinach with vitamin C to improve absorption.

Healthy fats are important for the health of hair and scalp.

Avocado, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and oily fish like salmon all provide essential fatty acids.

A variety of fruits and vegetables provide various vitamins and minerals necessary for hair growth.

Talk to your doctor about supplementation.

Many women benefit from continuing to take prenatal vitamins throughout the breastfeeding period.

If specific deficiencies are suspected, iron, vitamin D, zinc, or B-complex supplements may be recommended based on blood tests.

Never take supplements on your own without medical advice, especially if you are breastfeeding.

Some supplements, when taken in excess, can pass into breast milk or cause side effects.

Treat your hair gently during this vulnerable period.

Hair strands that are in the shedding phase will fall out anyway, but you can prevent further breakage by treating your hair gently.

Use wide-tooth combs instead of brushes when your hair is wet.

Avoid pulling your hair in very tight hairstyles that cause traction.

Minimize the use of heat styling tools such as flat irons and hair dryers, or use them at a low temperature with a heat protectant.

Avoid undergoing harsh chemical treatments such as straightening, relaxing, or bleaching during periods of intense hair loss.

Wait for the hair to stabilize before subjecting the strands to these additional stresses.

If you need to dye your hair, opt for less aggressive dyes or techniques that don't involve applying the dye to the roots.

Consider getting a shorter haircut during this period.

Many women find that shorter hair looks fuller and more voluminous, and it's also easier to manage when you're busy with a baby.

Furthermore, when new hairs begin to grow, a shorter cut makes the transition less noticeable.

Wash your hair as needed, without fear.

There's a myth that washing your hair less often helps reduce hair loss, but that's not true.

The hair that's going to fall out will fall out whether you wash it or not.

If you skip washes, you'll just accumulate loose hairs that would otherwise come out spread out over several days, creating the impression of more hair loss when you finally wash it.

Most importantly of all: take care of your mental and emotional health.

The stress of the postpartum period is already immense; adding anxiety about hair loss can create a vicious cycle.

Try to sleep when the baby sleeps, accept help from family and friends, don't try to be perfect.

If you are feeling very anxious or depressed, seek professional help.

The mother's mental health directly impacts physical recovery, including hair regrowth.

When to Seek Medical Help

In most cases, postpartum hair loss resolves on its own without the need for specific medical treatment.

However, there are some situations where it is worthwhile to seek guidance from a dermatologist or trichologist.

If hair loss continues intensely nine to twelve months after delivery, this is not typical of normal postpartum telogen effluvium.

This could indicate that another factor is maintaining the hair loss, such as an uncorrected nutritional deficiency, a thyroid problem, or even androgenetic alopecia that was revealed by postpartum hair loss.

If you develop specific bald patches, circular bald spots, or hair loss concentrated in specific areas, this is not typical postpartum hair loss.

It could be alopecia areata or another condition that requires different treatment.

If hair loss is accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as intense itching, scalp pain, redness, flaking, or skin lesions, this may indicate an additional dermatological condition.

If you notice signs of a possible thyroid problem, such as extreme fatigue that doesn't improve, significant unexplained weight changes, feeling excessively hot or cold, palpitations, or intense mood swings, ask your doctor to evaluate your thyroid function.

If you are very distressed by the fall and it is affecting your quality of life, your ability to care for your baby, or your mental health, don't hesitate to seek help.

Your emotional well-being is just as important as your physical health.

The Truth You Need to Hear

Here's the most important part of all: your hair WILL grow back.

It may not seem like it now, when you're seeing clumps of hair down the drain every day, but it will come back.

Millions of women go through this and completely regrow their hair.

You're not going bald, you're going through a normal and expected hormonal adjustment after having a baby.

Her body did something extraordinary by creating and giving birth to a new life.

He is now readjusting, returning to his pre-pregnancy state, and the hair loss is just part of that normalization process.

It's temporary, it's reversible, and it doesn't define you.

In the meantime, be kind to yourself.

You are navigating one of the most challenging periods of your life, creating a new human being while your own body recovers from a profound transformation.

If today all you can manage to do is throw your hair in a messy bun because you're too exhausted to do anything more than that, that's perfectly fine.

If you decide to cut your hair shorter because it's more practical, that's perfectly fine.

If you wear a bandana or scarf on days when you're feeling more insecure, that's perfectly fine.

What matters is you and your baby, not the volume of your hair.

And remember: the hair will grow back, but this precious time with your little baby goes by too quickly.

Don't let hair worries steal the joy from these moments.

Take care of yourself as best you can, rest when you can, eat well, and be patient.

Your body knows what to do, and your hair will grow back when the time is right.

Thousands of hairs in the drain after having a baby are alarming, but there's a scientific explanation and a solution.
